About Kilimo Trust

  • About us

Who We Are

We are an independent organization working on agriculture for development across the East Africa Community (EAC) Region – in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda – and more recently in the new Republic of South Sudan. We promote regional solutions to local problems. Our aim is to make agricultural markets work better for the reduction of poverty and elimination of hunger. We bring a commercial mind-set and market understanding to agricultural development within the EAC Region.

Our long, operational experience in the region, our ability to manage viable projects, and our strong technical and institutional capabilities are backed by a committed Board and Management Team. Our independence enables us to be impartial, and our Trust status means we operate flexibly with professionalism. Also as a regional organization in East Africa, we understand the realities and unique challenges on the ground, and are trusted by governments and other stakeholders.

What We Do

We deliver regional solutions to local problems by designing and implementing sector development programmes which respond to market opportunities across the region. We do this by providing thought leadership – create, advance, and share ideas – on EAC regional approaches to agriculture for wealth creation and food security. Then we undertake hands-on implementation of programme and project on behalf of – and/or in partnership with governments, international and regional organizations, and the private sector.

We develop and build a regional knowledge-base on key food commodities (crops and livestock) across the EAC to determine and agree with stakeholders on the most strategic commodities and priority areas of focus with interventions at regional scale – so as to “deliver the promise of the East Africa Common Market” with respect to reducing poverty and eliminating hunger.

Our History

We began in 2005 as an organization funding agricultural research focused on technical innovations. In 2008 we introduced new programmes focused on value-chains and how small and medium scale farmers can access profitable markets. We supported a portfolio of over 30 projects spread across the region, and dealing with strengthening agricultural value chains; building ‘investable entities” of smallholders to enable them become key players in local, national, and regional value chains; improving financial services for small and medium scale agricultural enterprises; and creating avenues for scaling-up technical, policy, and institutional innovations.

Our experience has shown us that, to reduce poverty, efforts must be directed at establishing viable “investable entities” of small and medium size agricultural enterprises that can meet quantities, quality standards, and timely deliveries demanded by other actors in the value chains, as well as the profitability levels demanded by investors and financiers. Our work has built such entities and then supported tri-partite partnership building between the investable entities of agri-SMEs, large scale agri-business and/or agro- processors, and commercial banks.
