Anthony Mugambi MakonaSenior Program Officer & Acting Country Team Leader – Kenya
An Agricultural Value Chains Development and Market Access Specialist, Anthony has over 10 years’ experience working with the private, public and civil society sectors across East Africa. Anthony has a passion for market-led initiatives geared at structured and inclusive agricultural trading systems. Anthony is currently the Program Team Leader for Kilimo Trust, Kenya and the immediate former Program Team Leader for a market-led DFID-funded project, the Beans Enterprises and Structured Trade in the EAC dubbed BEST-EAC. The project was implemented in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania where he has been responsible for building and mentoring national and cross-border beans trading consortia.

Anthony has also led project teams in national and regional initiatives funded by among others, UNDP, IFAD, AGRA and Kilimo Trust’s Board of Trustees. These initiatives are focused on both high value crops (horticulture and coffee) and food staples such as rice, beans, Irish potatoes, cassava, sorghum, green-grams. In addition, Anthony has led interventions in Apiculture (bee-keeping) and dairy.
Anthony has experience in brokering strategic partnerships aimed at enhancing mutually beneficial business partnerships, through sustainable institutional frameworks, between SHFs and other private sector players in the various Value Chains including financial institutions, inputs/equipment suppliers, extension and other business development services providers.
Anthony received the CEO’s commendation and award for building the most successful agribusiness linkages with the private sector in East African region and for commendable leadership as a program officer in the year 2014/2015. Anthony is a certified Trainer of Trainers on Building Sustainable Agribusiness Linkages, Regional Food Markets Access, Rural Financial Literacy, Farming as a Business and Contract Farming.
Anthony is also a GlobalGAP and KenyaGAP standards compliance auditor. Anthony joined Kilimo Trust in June 2012 as a Program Officer – Value Chain Institutions and Support Institutions and Services. Anthony holds a master of science degree in Agricultural Production Value Chains Management (Cum Laude/First Class Honours). Anthony’s research paper (Master thesis) was on “analyzing sustainable out-growers’ and contract farming business models.” He also holds a bachelor of science (Bsc.) in Horticulture.
