Overview:

IMAP4CSA is a 2-year project (2019 – 2021) that aims at mitigating & adapting to climate change, and increasing rice productivity by providing farmers  with actionable information services, based on digital data systems, supports them in better decision-making in risk management. The project falls under the Enabel's Digital for Development (D4D) programme called Wehubit on scaling up digital solutions in Iringa region and targets to benefit 12,000 smallholder paddy farmers by mapping in Iringa region. It is funded by the Belgian governmental cooperation through their development agency Enabel and Implemented by Kilimo Trust and Rikolto

Project goal:

The project aims:

1. to strengthen farmers’ rice-related climate change mitigation practices,
2. to support farmers in their adaptation to climate change and
3. to sustainably increase smallholder rice farmers’ agricultural productivity and income by scaling-up digital knowledge and information services in combination with the Sustainable Rice Platform standard to smallholder farmers in Iringa region.

Outcomes of Project:

1. Mitigation actions to climate change contributing to a reduction of GHG emissions up to of 20 %, reduction of water use of 15% and higher nutrient use efficiency of 15%.
2. Adaptation to climate change contributing to increased access to digital solutions of 50%.
3. Productivity and income: increase with 50%.

What has been achieved so far:

IMAP4CSA project in partnership with Ruaha Milling Company Limited - who in turn has partnered with a local agro-dealer in Iringa called Alfa Agrovets Suppliers Limited - and local village-based agents is now supplying fertiliser to farmers so they can assure the miller of a constant supply of paddy. This has enabled bulk purchase of fertiliser by farmers thereby enabling Alfa Agrovets Suppliers Limited to “see” business in supplying the farmers. The local agro-dealer is benefiting through more sales of fertiliser as his client base has increased by the newly created business linkage with Ruaha millers’ engaged farmers in the irrigation schemes.
