Overview:

Fortified Nutritious Soy-based Products in Kenya is a one-year (2020-20201) project funded by International Fertilizer Development Center on behalf of the 2-SCALE program consortium. The project is implemented by Kilimo Trust as the Business Support Service provider in partnership with Prosoya Ltd as the soybeans off-taker and aims at providing access to 7,000 BoP consumers, with fortified nutritious soy-based products.

The project goal:

The overall goal of this project is to provide access to 7,000 BoP consumers, with fortified nutritious soy-based products

Specific Objectives are:

  1. To develop products that are targeting the BoP consumers as well as develop a marketing and distribution system for the same.
  2. To gradually replace the sourcing of the soy from imports to locally sourcing from the SHFs in Tharaka Nithi, Embu, Kirinyaga and Nyeri counties.

Activities are to be implemented by KT:

Kilimo Trust shall implement the following activities of the annual partnership action plan through this sub-grant:

  1. Support in organizing community outreach and awareness sessions and mobilization and profiling of farmers to be engaged in the program with Prosoya
  2. Strengthen the capacity of lead farmers to be engaged as trainers on Good Agriculture Practices (GAP), Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA), Post-Harvest Management (PHM)
  3. Strengthen Small Holder Farmer (SHF) groups on leadership, governance, gender/youth, and business skills
  4. Train at least 2000 SHFs on production, CSA, Postharvest, and aflatoxin management
  5. Facilitate access to affordable financial and insurance services for at least 1500 SHF's
  6. Strengthen the capacity of 12 Agro-dealers, community seed bulkers, organized farmer groups and 30 aggregation centers
  7. Facilitate governance meetings to monitor progress of field activities among actors
  8. Implement environmental risks mitigation measures
  9. Activities implementation and reporting

What has been achieved so far:

  1. Eight (8) partners have been recruited to the project excluding producer organizations. These partners are: Agrichem Ltd, New Downtown Agrovet, Greenlife crop protection Ltd, Juhudi Kilimo, MoA, Agri-Price Center Ltd, KALRO Mwea, and Farm Africa. This partnership is led by Prosoya Ltd based in Nairobi - Kenya.
  2. 1,495 (158 young male, 454 adult male, 136 young female, and 747 adult male) farmers from 28 POs have been sensitized on opportunity in soyabeans production, and profiled.
  3. The criteria for selecting lead farmers have been developed.
  4. 40 (2 young male, 16 senior male, 5 young female, and 17 adult female) group leaders have been trained on governance, leadership, and financial sustainability.
  5. 15 learning sites have been established and Climate Smart (CS) technologies demonstrated.
  6. 727 (54 young male, 189 adult male, 87 young female, and 397 adult female) farmers have been trained on production, CSA, Postharvest, and aflatoxin management.
  7. 209 (65 male and 144 female) producers have placed their orders for soyabeans seeds in the long rains 2021.
  8. 1 M&E exercise have been implemented in the project area by 2-SCALE team.
  9. In partnership with Farm Africa, farmers are taught regeneration agriculture that is assisting them to conserve their environment.
