Cold Storage Brings Fresh Hope to Rwanda’s Highlands

Eco-Friendly Solutions Support Horticulture CooperativesAcross the misty slopes of Musanze and Nyabihu districts, farmers now have new tools to preserve their harvests. On February 27–28, 2025, Kilimo Trust—under the Kungahara Project (funded by the European Union through Rikolto)—handed over zero-energy cooling chambers and solar-powered onion dryers to four farmer cooperatives:

• Dukomeze Ubuzima

• KORUMISHI

• KOGIMUIN

• KAUIJE

Previously, these vegetable producers faced postharvest losses of up to 40% due to poor storage and cold-induced spoilage. The new infrastructure is enabling better postharvest handling, longer shelf life, and stronger access to premium markets—all while reducing environmental impact.
