In the green highlands of Gisagara District, Southern Rwanda, something is quietly growing—rows of fruit trees, restored land, and a renewed sense of purpose for one young farmer and his community.

Jean Nsengimana, a graduate of the Rural Youth Employment Support (R-YES) project, is helping shift the story of rural youth—away from uncertainty, toward sustainability and self-reliance. The initiative, implemented by Kilimo Trust, equips young people with technical and entrepreneurial skills to pursue meaningful careers in agriculture.

Confronted with the twin challenges of youth unemployment and environmental degradation, Jean turned to agroforestry as a solution. Through R-YES, he received practical training in cultivation and business development—skills that helped him start his own agroforestry venture and inspire others to think differently about farming.

Jean’s approach combines income generation with ecological care. He grows fruit trees and promotes the planting of indigenous and climate-resilient species, supporting soil restoration, biodiversity, and food security—especially for vulnerable households in his community.

“My goal is to empower youth to view agriculture not as a fallback option, but as a viable and dignified career path,” Jean says.

His efforts have contributed to stronger value chains, growing youth engagement in agroforestry, and broader awareness of sustainable land use practices.

Looking ahead, Jean has his sights set on growth and impact.

“I’m full of hope for the future. I want to grow my business and create jobs for others. My dream is to open an avocado processing factory that produces oil and other products like juice.”

Jean’s story reflects the power of targeted support to unlock youth potential. With the right tools and opportunity, young people like him are not just finding livelihoods—they’re helping build a more resilient, food-secure future for all.
