Description:
The Karamoja Regenerative Agriculture and Market System (KaReAMS) is a project funded by aBi Trust and implemented by Kilimo Trust in Abim and Otuke districts in Uganda. KaReAMS is set to revolutionize farming practices, with a specific focus on regenerative agriculture. This transformative initiative aims to empower and enrich 1500 farmers across the region, fostering sustainable and equitable agricultural ecosystems.
Project Objectives:
Enhance Farming Skills:
- Elevate the agricultural prowess of 800 smallholder farmers in Abim and 700 in Otuke districts.
- Impart climate-smart farming practices tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities of each district.
Boost Business Collaboration:
- Establish dynamic soybean and sorghum business consortia in Abim and Otuke districts.
- Bolster production, processing, and market access through improved collaboration among farmers and key stakeholders.
Empower Women and Youth:
- Ensure at least 30% of beneficiaries are women, with targeted training and opportunities in Abim and Otuke districts.
- Engage 20% of vibrant youth from both districts, fostering their active participation in the project’s success.
Promote Sustainable Farming:
- Institute eco-friendly practices, emphasizing agroforestry and crop rotations in Abim and Otuke districts.
- Enhance soil fertility and preserve the environmental balance within the unique agricultural landscapes of both districts.
Increase Productivity and Income:
- Target a remarkable 25% boost in sorghum and soybean yields for farmers in Abim and Otuke.
- Enhance food security and elevate the economic well-being of farmers in both districts.
Facilitate Market Access:
- Establish a structured market system through produce aggregation in Abim and Otuke.
- Secure off-take agreements with prominent companies to streamline the route to market, ensuring efficient distribution of farmers’ yields.
Enhance Climate Resilience:
- Introduce climate-smart technologies and adaptive practices tailored to the unique climatic conditions of Abim and Otuke.
- Fortify the resilience of farming communities, enabling them to effectively confront challenges posed by abrupt weather changes.
