Rwanda’s agricultural sector is poised to create multiple jobs as the country continues to prioritize the development of the sector.
Rwanda’s agricultural sector, which employs about 70% of the workforce predominantly youth is increasingly positioned as a central pillar of the country’s economic strategy. Through the efforts of organizations like Kilimo Trust, targeted programs are addressing key barriers such as skills gaps and limited market access, enabling young people to actively participate in and benefit from the agricultural value chain. These initiatives involve close collaboration with technical colleges, TVET centers, and industry partners to offer practical training and mentorship, empowering youth with both technical and entrepreneurial skills. As a result, young people are becoming not just job seekers but also innovators and business owners in fields like food processing, irrigation, and mechanized farming.
A standout initiative is the Innovative Rural Employment Services (RES) program, implemented with support from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Since 2021, it has created over 8,000 jobs, providing youth including individuals with disabilities opportunities to launch and sustain agricultural ventures.
By promoting inclusive growth and entrepreneurship, the program is fostering a new generation of agripreneurs equipped to drive Rwanda’s rural economy forward. These efforts not only demonstrate the country’s commitment to sustainable development but also serve as a replicable model for other African nations seeking to harness the economic power of their youth through agriculture.
