In coastal Kenya, climate change is making traditional livelihoods such as farming and fishing increasingly unpredictable, pushing many communities to turn to seaweed farming as an alternative source of income.
In Kibuyuni, Kwale County, we're working with communities to unlock more value from seaweed. Instead of selling a kilogram of raw seaweed for as little as KSh 50, women are now processing it into products such as soap, shampoo and lotion—opening up new markets and increasing their earning potential.
This work is part of the Women and Youth Economic Empowerment in Fisheries through Inclusive Market Access (WYFEEMA) Programme, led by the AfCFTA Secretariat, TradeMark Africa and the Mastercard Foundation.
