1. About Kilimo Trust
Kilimo Trust (KT) is an independent Regional agricultural development organization - working on agriculture for development across the EAC Region. It is registered in the Republic of Uganda, and it implements projects across all EAC Partner States. The core business of Kilimo Trust is to support the transformation of food and nutrition security in the EAC Region away from high-risk subsistence farming into lower-risk trade-based systems.
Kilimo Trust, in partnership with TradeMark Africa, is co-implementing the five-year WYEEFIMA programme - Women and Youth Economic Empowerment in Fisheries through Inclusive Market Access, with Lattice Aquaculture, and MicroSave Consulting. The programme is funded by the Mastercard Foundation. KT leads the fish cross-border trade and distribution component and has mobilized youth aged 18–35 for employment opportunities, both as wage earners and entrepreneurs (self-employed), within and beyond the fish/seaweed value chains.
2. The Assignment:
Kilimo Trust is seeking to engage an experiential trainer who will operate from a non-formal training Centre OR a Fisheries Association equipped with appropriate facilities and equipment to deliver hands-on training for WYEEFIMA participants: primarily women and youth aged 18 to 35. The training will focus on practical skills in hygienic fish/seaweed handling, value addition, storage, and packaging. The objective of the assignment is to build participants’ competencies in post-harvest practices and value addition to improve fish quality and marketability.
3. Scope of Work
The Consultant will be responsible for delivering practical training to WYEEFIMA participants in either of the following key areas:
a) Hygienic handling and value addition for the market.
b) Fish preservation technologies, including chilled/frozen, sun-dried/salted, smoked, deep-fried products, and other products.
c) Seaweed value addition and innovative products.
d) Appropriate fish/seaweed packaging, labeling, and storage tailored to the specific value addition or curing method applied.
e) Train a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 40 non-fish actor participants within 4 days. The trainer will be expected to have trained 80 participants within 40 days.
4. Consultant Deliverables:
a) Train 80 participants within 40 days in post-harvest practices and value addition.
b) Submission of a professionally formatted final training report, detailing the training process, outcomes, and recommendations.
5. Locations:
Interested applicants are required to indicate their preferred location or the region in which they wish to facilitate the training.
The trainings will be conducted in the following regions:
a) Kigoma (Uvinza & Kibirizi Districts)
b) Tanga (Mkinga & Pangani Districts)
c) Zanzibar (Unguja)
d) Arusha (Karatu district).
6. Qualifications:
a) Proficiency and extensive experience at the community level, i.e., minimum 3 years of experience in hands-on hygienic fish handling, value addition skills, and trade of fish products.
b) Basic or medium level fluency in the language of instruction. For instance, English or Kiswahili
c) Relevant certifications or formal training in the craft or as a trainer (DIT or vocational training institution is an added advantage).
