The Poultry Value Chain in Uganda

Chicken rearing is the predominant form of poultry production in Uganda, with other fowls such as turkeys, guinea fowls, ducks, pigeons, geese, and ostriches also being kept. Chicken rearing, which accounts for about 95% of all poultry, is a vibrant commercial enterprise supporting over 3.2 million households. It plays a crucial role in livelihood and food security, with significant potential for widespread impact.

There are two main types of chickens reared in Uganda: local/indigenous breeds and exotic breeds. The majority of households (over 80%) own indigenous chickens, while less than 10% own exotic breeds. Over the past decade, poultry production in Uganda has been growing at an annual rate of 5% and is projected to increase by 98% by 2030. Similarly, chicken meat production has been increasing at an annual rate of 6.1% and is expected to grow by 130.4% by 2030.
